BOOK EM DANNO
|
The first decade of the 21st Century could easily be called the Age of the Magazine: each month new magazines seem to materialize on bookstore shelves and at checkout counter lines, and magazine subscriptions have become cheaper and more prevalent. Magazines cater to every possible interest and specialty: sports, computers, music, cooking, fashion, tattoos, pets, travel, hobbies & crafts, politics…the variety is endless. Due to this flood of new magazines, as well as the large number of advertisers buying ad space in these publications, the subscription costs of many new magazines has plummeted to amazingly low prices. The following magazines are available through Amazon.com for $10.00 or less for yearly subscriptions.
Men’s Fashion/Entertainment/ “Lifestyle” Magazines”
Esquire: Of the magazines in this category, Esquire is the oldest, best known and probably the best. It has fairly well written stories, articles, and interviews with interesting and famous people. It generally contains book, movie and music reviews, and fashion spreads, but it doesn’t overdo that part. It has enough of the obligatory pictures of beautiful babes: but safe enough to pass prison muster.
FHM: FHM can be summed up in three words: girls, girls, girls. Lots of cute young things in towels and bikinis looking at the camera and pouting. Which isn’t a bad thing. The articles surrounding them are concerned with entertainment, fashion, sex, Hollywood and living la vida loca. Most of the articles are a page or two long and don’t require a great deal of concentration. You may want to double-check, but I think this one is okay in prison, too.
King: Finally, a magazine where the models don’t look like they need a sandwich! King is a new magazine, aimed at the young African-American male. Among the first cover girls were Mya and L’il Kim, and the models throughout the magazine are a lot more substantial that the bony ones you’re used to seeing in other magazines. The magazine covers fashion, movies, music, books, current events, politics, interviews, all with a hip-hop slant and urban attitude.

Music and Entertainment
Vibe: Covers hip-hop culture in its many forms with an emphasis on the music.
Spin: Spin was initially published to fill the void left by “Rolling Stone,” which became too mainstream; now, Spin is seen by many as the forerunner in the field of music reporting and pop-culture journalism.
Blender: Blender is a music magazine that focuses more on Top-40 radio and the artists who drive it; for instance, running stories on the “famous” Christina-Britney feud, and they summed up Aerosmith as “a group that had some hits in the 70’s and was sampled by Eminem” (WHAT!?!?!.) Obviously for people who like elevator music.
Remix: This magazine is described as being the complete guide for anyone interested in making or producing hip-hop, house, trance, techno, experimental or electronic music. Unless you’re planning a rave in the visitor’s park, I don’t think this one will be for you! But then, if you’re an aspiring hip-hop artist, it just might be. It does provide contact information on people in the business.
Interview: This magazine was originally created by artist Andy Warhol. It is presented in a “Question and Answer” format, with celebrity interviewers asking interview subjects questions in informal settings. I’ve never seen this magazine – and reviews I’ve read have been mixed. I believe your appreciation of it would depend on whether you admired the artistry of Andy Warhol or not.
The remaining “1-year for under $10” magazines will be reviewed in the June newsletter. These magazines are available through Amazon.com; therefore, they would be available through the FDRAG book drawing. Oh – and please – pass your books and magazines along to others when you’re through with them, particularly the books and magazines you get through FDRAG. Knowledge is power; let’s share the power! Until next month, Happy Reading! ………………………………DANNO
