VOLUME –XII 2004
(Personal opinions of our Guest writers do not necessarily reflect the opinions of FDRAG or its members)
Hi there!! My name is Lotte, I come from as far away as Denmark and I send the news-letter to 20 guys every month. I am just glad to be able to help out by doing so, and to hear that you enjoy reading it. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone in there a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, with best wishes for the coming year. "See you" again in a month or so.

My name is Lisa, and I send the newsletter to 15 readers. Aside from that, I’m the mom of Ali (18) and Tamara (15). We live with 2 dogs, one cat, and 15 birds (at last count, because the only thing Zebra-finches do is make more Zebra-finches). I also write in the newsletter whenever our extremely strict wonderful editor tells me to. I truly hope you enjoy the newsletter – we’re forever trying to improve, and your ideas and suggestions are always welcome.

Bonjour, Guten Tag, Hello from Karin
Season’s greetings to everyone on the row and warm hellos to Kevin, Mike and Shagee. FDRAG’s awesome director, Hannah, asked that this month’s newsletter be filled with warmth and happiness thus you won’t read my usual legal column but rather one of a different kind, which I have called Bonjour/Guten Tag/Hello. How should I begin, I work in Washington, DC, live in Silver Spring, Maryland, was raised in Switzerland, and joined FDRAG nearly 5 years ago. My role has grown over the years and I am proud to now be one of the co-moderators; I mail out 45 newsletters every month directly, and 10 indirectly (by that I mean that I print out and copy the newsletter for a few FDRAG members unable to do so), I fill card requests, mail out the information packet and began writing a legal column once I became a paralegal this summer (also have a MA degree in comparative literature). I last visited at UCI in June but just saw Hannah in October on board the Spirit of Washington, the ship on which the NCADP hosted its dinner gala. In addition to hoping to see the death penalty be abolished and conditions in prison improve, I am a fervent supporter of animal rights; though I hasten to add that I am also a social butterfly, enjoying the many activities available right here in DC; the opera, the theater, and the movies. So here goes: the best, legal success and until next year……..Karin

DIANNE’S RANT
Hello!
Hi Everyone! Tis’ the Season! November is behind us (thankfully!), winter is fast approaching, and we move on to the final month of the year. I know what some of you are wondering—did I gnash my teeth down to the gums during the election; and yes, of course, I am horribly saddened and disappointed with how the election turned out. Well, let me rephrase that… I’m more than just disappointed. I feel like the nation has been gutted like a carp. What were voters thinking?!
I know, we have to accept it, as hard as that may be to do, and it’s time to stop licking our wounds and move on, but damn, it’s hard to do. Already, with one Justice battling cancer, speculation swirls as to how soon a new Supreme Court Justice will need to be nominated. I fear it will be soon, and it terrifies me to think of who it might be.
We’ve seen several key cabinet officers drop like flies since the election, and although it’s no loss to see Ashcroft depart, the confirmation of Gonzales in his place is maybe an even scarier thing. Gonzales was one of Bush’s good ole’ Texas boys and he orchestrated execution orders at the bidding of Dub’ya. He also wrote legal arguments that stated "enemy combatants," as designated by the president, could be held without the right to challenge their detention. It took the Supreme Court to rule earlier this year that this was unconstitutional. Gonzales even sent a memo to Bush in which he suggested the Geneva Conventions were “obsolete”, which only suggests that the abuses that took place at Abu Ghraib were totally acceptable to him. Gonzales has demonstrated that he’s a Bush “team player” and more than willing to violate civil liberties in guise of fighting terror. Why does this scare me? Many feel that the appointment of Gonzales as US Attorney General is designed to give him a few more credentials in order to slide him in as a Supreme Court justice nominee in the not too distant future. Gulp.
So, yeah, I’m gutted, and scared to death of where we’ll all be in four more years. I’m afraid for us all. I fear we’ll not only still be at war in Iraq, but perhaps maybe Iran as well.
|
I fear the draft may be reinstated, and I fear for the future of the young soldiers that will fight and die as we carry on in this unnecessary war. I fear further undoing of environmental protections that took so long to be put into place. I fear the increasing attack on civil liberties that is surely to come, and the continued merging of church and state, and I fear the continuation of thousands of jobs being out-sourced to foreign countries. I fear these vacancies in the Bush Cabinet being filled with yes-men (and women) and more of his cronies, and I fear a Republican majority in the Congress. It all sounds pretty bleak, doesn’t it? But, there is always hope. In the darkest days, regardless of how bleak the future may look, there is hope!
So, it is during my final rant of the year that I can hopefully put political discussion to bed for awhile. I’ve had enough of it, and I’m sure you’ve all heard enough of my whining these last few months as well. It doesn’t look like anything will change much for the better over the next four years, we can only pray it doesn’t get as bad as it has the potential to be. Let’s stand together for change, enlightenment, and a return to sanity. Let’s move on.
Oh, before we completely turn the page and put political comments behind us… Did you hear that our “compassionate” Prez commuted the death sentence of a turkey for Thanksgiving? Yup, it made the news, and most people gave a chuckle at the comical imagery. To those of us who know better, it’s really not funny considering that he executed 152 men and women while governor of Texas. Four more years, eh? I’m not bitter…really…
Let me take a few moments at the end of my rant this month by wishing you all the peace and joy of the season. Thanks to those of you who I know personally for your ongoing love and continued friendship. Your presence in my life is the greatest of all gifts, and you give me the inspiration and courage to fight on, and speak up, and I love you for it. To those of you who have written and are still waiting for a reply, I promise I’ll get to you. Thanks for taking the time to write! Blessings and Love to you all---Dianne

This has been a terrible month, and ever since November 2nd, Miss Hannah has manifested three out of the five stages of grief, as per Elisabeth Kübler-Ross*. Bargaining and acceptance are so far not a part of her mental state. Of course, as you all know, on that date 51% of the voters in this country decided that another 4 years of George W. Bush was just what we needed – well, please don’t think I didn’t try to warn them..
But as usual, no one listens to me! Anyway, those of us who assumed that the election was going to be a referendum on an ill-advised war waged on a false premise, or maybe even about the economy, were all wrong; those issues all diminished when compared to the alarming prospect of gays prancing about, violating the hypothetical sanctity of marriage. The day after the election, the President held a press conference, during which he said that his administration would “reach out to those who share our goals”…..
And I used to think that ‘reaching out’ was by definition a conciliatory effort towards those who don…..oh, forget it. He also stated that he now had a mandate and had earned “political capital.” So now we know: It’s going to be a long four years…. Starting with several changes to the President’s cabinet. The first change was the replacement of Attorney General John Ashcroft – a change which actually goes to prove that just as you think things couldn’t possibly get any worse, they do: The replacement is Alberto Gonzales, who used to work for George Bush when Mr. Bush was governor of the state of Texas; it was Gonzales who used to brief the governor in the clemency cases of death sentenced prisoners in that state. This was a task which for George W. Bush never exceeded 30 minutes, and took place on the scheduled day of execution. Such briefings would routinely omit evidence in favor of the defendant, even – at least in one case – evidence of actual innocence. In a related story, on November 17th, the President pardoned Biscuits & Gravy, the Thanksgiving turkeys. He may have received the usual 30-minute briefing by Gonzales, but decided to grant the pardons regardless, likely out of overriding respect for White House tradition.
Another member of the President’s cabinet to resign was Colin Powell, the Secretary of State, who spent the past 4 years spectacularly ruining his international reputation – as the reader will recall, it was Secretary Powell, who presented the administration’s case for war (that Iraq had WMD) to the UN.
Powell was replaced by Condoleeza Rice, among other things famous for her testimony before the 9/11 Commission, in particular the following exchange, regarding an August 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing, which warned about “patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings and other attacks”:
|
Commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste: “Isn’t it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6th PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB.” National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice: “I believe the title was ‘Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States.’” Here I had planned to insert a snarky comment about Dr. Rice’s promotion – but I got nothing. I’m just going to go bang my head against a wall somewhere. On the bright side of course, it has been reported that Dr. Rice is “so close to the President that she can finish his sentences” – & as you know, that makes one of them.
Unfortunately for me, sometimes it’s necessary to be serious – this is one of those times: Among the many losses of 2004 were Johnny Robinson and John Blackwelder. One aspect of the death warrant is that it provides a period of time during which people on the outside can try to grapple with the notion that soon the person who used to write to them will no longer be there – that all we will ever know of this person is contained in letters long since received. In FDRAG, it is Miss Hannah, who reads and responds to all the letters, over time getting to know the people she must eventually learn to let go of, while trying to hold on to the memories of who they were. I know that the time designated in the warrant is never long enough for her to learn the lesson well – I know because she tells me of her sadness; I can only imagine how inadequate it must have been for those who were so much closer to Johnny Robinson and John Blackwelder.
But 2004 has finally come to an end – finally, because in so many ways, for so many people, it has been a year filled with frustration, anger, violence and loss. It is impossible at this point to open a newspaper and not wonder what next year will bring with at least a measure of trepidation; and in between the bad news on a grand scale, we sometimes read the little things which just make us go: “Huh???” With the news that a woman from the state of Florida was trying to sell a 10 year old cheese sandwich on Ebay (an internet auction site), convinced that the sandwich not only bore the image of Virgin Mary, but the “the image grows stronger every year” – the bidding reached $20,000 before Ebay pulled the auction – I think it’s safe to say that we’ve officially bottomed out for this year. All that’s left for me to do is to wish you a positively purrfect Christmas. Oh, and Miss Hannah just came into my office to ask me if we still had enough Democrats in the Senate for a filibuster. I think she has entered the bargaining stage.
Yours Truly…R. Udeasheck
